Following extensive research and development in collaboration with Harvard University and the UMPRUM school of art and design in Prague, we have faithfully recreated the original breathtaking galley proofs of James Joyce’s Ulysses.
The galleys, with Joyce's hand written notes, were first printed by Maurice Darantière in Dijon, France. They were later gifted to the Houghton Library at Harvard University, who kindly shared access so we could carefully recreate by hand in a two-stage print process on large Ingres d'ARCHES, 100% cotton, 130gsm, 65x50cm paper sheets.
Only 150 copies of the first edition of Ulysses were printed on paper from ARCHES. The mill was founded in 1492, the year Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Remarkably they are still in business today, and this we celebrate!
All patrons of Ulysses Whiskey x Art will receive a signed, stamped and embossed galley proof, featuring four pages of Ulysses on one large sheet, each hand-made and one-of-one. This is also the certificate of authenticity of your unique bottle of Ulysses Whiskey.
Please note supply is strictly limited and delivery might not be possible before Christmas in all cases, but we can send you a card to print and place under the tree if all else fails!
In printing and publishing, proofs are the preliminary versions of publications meant for review by authors, editors, and proofreaders, often with extra-wide margins. Galley proofs may be uncut and unbound. They are created for proofreading and copyediting purposes.
Welcome to the journey.
